Hannah Frances – Surviving You
Hannah Frances turns endurance into song with ‘Surviving You’, the lead single from her forthcoming album ‘Nested in Tangles’. The Vermont-based artist tackles generational trauma head-on, transforming personal rage into a cathartic act. Working again with producer Kevin Copeland and enlisting Grizzly Bear’s Daniel Rossen for arrangements, Frances builds sprawling compositions that draw from contemporary classical and ’70s prog rock.
Frances is digging through layers of family dysfunction to find solid ground. Her fingerpicking dances around Sarah Clausen’s breathy clarinet, creating space for brutal honesty about people who ‘refuse to see themselves or take accountability’.
Frances describes it as her reckoning with receiving harm from people projecting their pain. The self-directed video, shot in her former Chicago home base, captures this perfectly—intimate yet expansive, personal yet universal. After last year’s critically acclaimed ‘Keeper of the Shepherd’, she’s not interested in playing it safe.
‘Nested in Tangles’ promises to be an ambitious work, with contributions from horn, wind, and string musicians alongside Frances’ characteristic intricate guitar work. The album explores what she calls ‘complex stories of familial estrangement’, but there’s something hopeful in how she frames it—not just surviving, but learning to ‘affirm lived experience’.
